General Immigration Sponsorship Guidelines

All international scholars/visitors to Sanford-Burnham must be in a visa classification appropriate for their proposed visit and activity at the Institute, as determined by the Staff of the International Office. Once a person's position at the Institute is finalized by the Human Resources Office, eligibility for immigration sponsorship at the Institute is determined based on several factors which includes, but is not limited to a person's:

1. proposed activity at the Institute and current academic level

2. the length of their visit

3. documented funding for the activity

4. current, and if applicable, past immigration status in the U.S.

Once the appropriate immigration sponsorship is determined, the International Office will issue the immigration documents the international scholar/visitor will need to apply for a visa to enter the U.S. In some cases, an application/petition may first need to be submitted to and approved by U.S. Immigration (USCIS) before the immigration documents needed for the visa application may be sent to the scholar/visitor. USCIS processing times for these applications/petitions fluctuate and can average three months or longer in some cases. The Staff of the International Office can provide updated processing times at the time the application/petition is submitted. Please note that these processing times are in addition to processing times for the visa at the U.S. embassy/consulate.
