Competitive Difference
Sanford-Burnham's collaborations with private industry, public institutions, and academia enables the Accelerator to provide emerging companies with all of the resources needed to achieve success. Start-up companies will have access to business planning services through the Rady School, the equipment, shared resources and expertise of Sanford-Burnham, and CONNECT's industry ties to help them implement successful strategies for innovation. There are very few, if any, other incubators that provide such a breadth of resources focused on bringing new biotechnology innovations from the lab to the patient. This structure allows the entrepreneur the freedom to develop their ideas without the need to sacrifice ownership of his or her company.
Scientific Facilities
The newly constructed Accelerator consists of 3,000 square feet of state-of-the-art customizable laboratory space. Lab sizes vary from 300 to 500 square feet and are well-equipped with modern wet lab equipment and other common equipment. The space also includes business offices, conference rooms, 24/7 access and security, loading dock, mail room and janitorial services.
Shared Resources
Entrepreneurs are able to take advantage of the cutting-edge equipment and in-house expertise found in Sanford-Burnham's more than 30 shared resource cores, including animal facilities, DNA analysis, high-throughput screening, bioinformatics, and more. Application
Accelerator space will be awarded to up to six Sanford-Burnham or UC San Diego spin-out companies. Ideas must first be approved by CONNECT Springboard's Innovation Assessment Panel. Candidate companies will have access to Springboard's Entrepreneurs-in-Residence and Domain Experts to assist them with planning for efficient business formation and development. The Accelerator is a collaboration between three of San Diego's premier life sciences leaders: Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, CONNECT Springboard program, and the UC San Diego Rady School of Management. CONNECT Springboard, San Diego's leading entrepreneurship organization, provides support with programs and services to advance innovation. CONNECT Springboard is instrumental in assisting young companies in accessing sources of capital, providing entrepreneur education, and networking. The Rady School of Management offers access to emerging leaders of innovation-driven organizations that understand how to move ideas into the marketplace and convert opportunities into business realities. The combination of these three organizations provides companies with all the essential tools to help them succeed and gain independence.
Weekly Seminars
Entrepreneurs are invited to attend weekly seminars hosted by Sanford-Burnham. A robust schedule of scientific presentations features visiting university and industry researchers from top U.S. and international institutions. Speakers are established leaders in their respective fields of study.
