Victoria Thaney's Research Focus

Victoria’s research is focused on pathological processes associated with human immunodeficiency virus-1(HIV-1) infection, in particular HIV-1 associated dementia (HAD). HIV-1 is known to infect macrophages and microglia in central nervous system (CNS) causing alarming neuronal injuries and apoptosis, as well as inducing severe neurological problems. Despite extensive research revealing functional roles in infection and widespread use of antiretroviral therapy, there is no current complete protection from HAD.

Victoria aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms of chemokines, inflammatory cytokines and their receptors that are contributing to HAD. Understanding the pathways involved in inflammation and neurodegenerative disease can offer therapeutic intervention in NeuroAIDS against the highly mutable HIV-1.
