About the Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center
There are a number of scientists here whose work is really on the verge of being translated into the clinic. I want to promote that as much as possible.
The Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center studies the relationship between the human body and the microbes that live within it. The study of infectious and inflammatory diseases is centered in the science of immunology. The investigation of immunity and microbes is synergistic with Sanford-Burnham's other areas of research—for instance, microbial infections are linked to several cancers, chronic inflammation is commonly associated with an increased risk of cancer, and inflammation is also an exacerbating component of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
