3rd Annual Rare Disease Day Symposium
Identifying and Treating Rare Disorders
Sanford-Burnham’s successful series of Rare Disease Day symposia is based on the concept that treatment of rare diseases requires participation and exchange among all stakeholders—scientists, physicians, affected patients and their families, support groups, granting agencies, industry, and philanthropists.
This year’s event, organized by Dr. Hudson Freeze, will focus on Glycosylation-Based Disorders: Discovery, Patients, and Progress Toward Treatments.

Structural Analysis of Supramolecular Assemblies by Hybrid Methods
6th International Conference
The 2012 Symposium on the Structural Analysis of Supramolecular Assemblies by Hybrid Methods builds on successful previous meetings on the same theme from 2004-2010. As in previous years, the overall goal is to illustrate the power of combining state of the art methods to tackle important and challenging biological problems and to identify limitations and gaps in currently practiced hybrid methods. The central premise is that gaining a comprehensive understanding of the highly sophisticated complexes, machines, and organelles of the cell requires the coordinated application of complementary biophysical approaches (hybrid methods). We have recruited an outstanding panel of speakers who utilize multiple approaches to investigate a variety of complex biological systems. Each speaker has been asked to spend at least part of his/her lecture presenting the techniques that they use and their relative advantages and limitations.
Sanford-Burnham's Dorit Hanein, Ph.D. is an organizer of the conference.

2012 ARCS Scientist of the Year Dinner
Dean Kamen - Our Brilliant Future Belongs to the Innovators
Dean Kamen
Scientist, Innovator, Entrepreneur
The ARCS San Diego Chapter will be honoring Dean Kamen as the 2012 Scientist of the Year on Wednesday, March 28.
Dean Kamen is an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a tireless advocate for science and technology. His roles as inventor and advocate are intertwined—his own passion for technology and its practical uses has driven his personal determination to spread the word about technology's virtues and by so doing to change the culture of the United States.
ARCS Foundation advances science and technology in the United States by providing financial awards to academically outstanding U.S. citizens studying to complete degrees in science, engineering and medical research. For academic year 2010-2011, the seventeen ARCS Foundation chapters together contributed $3,884,623 to 503 students at 52 colleges and universities. Since 1958, ARCS Foundation has awarded $78,645,569 to Scholars.
Sanford-Burnham CEO John Reed, M.D., Ph.D. was the 2007 San Diego Chapter ARCS Foundation Scientist of the Year.

4th Annual International Certificate Program
Eureka Institute for Translational Medicine
Translational medicine encompasses the continuum from identifying an idea to its development into new therapies for human diseases. By enabling people to develop research through this continuum, we will move critical scientific insights into tangible benefits for patients. The Program is offered by the Eureka Institute for Translational Medicine.
Over an intensive 7-days, we will examine case studies, and help you develop creative problem solving strategies and novel skills to build new kinds of teams. You’ll also hone your ability to communicate effectively across broad audiences. The certificate program is tailored to individual needs, and is based on learner-centered discussions and mentoring by internationally recognized leaders. Skills garnered from this course will help individuals and team members to address the challenges facing drug development today, and bridge the divide between concept and patient.
