Next generation diagnostics, therapies and cures
Sanford-Burnham established an affiliation with the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2006. In 2009, Sanford-Burnham expanded its collaboration with UCSB by together establishing the Center for Nanomedicine. The focus of the Center is to promote the convergence of biomedical research with engineering, materials sciences, nanotechnology and physics to produce innovative technologies for an entirely new generation of biosensors, medical devices, drug delivery systems, instruments for advanced biomedical research, and other products.
This collaboration, between a highly ranked university and a nonprofit, independent research institute, exemplifies the inherent value of interdisciplinary research and the enhanced potential created when two such entities join forces.
The Center for Nanomedicine is led by
Jamey D. Marth, Ph.D. The Center is also home to the
Vascular Mapping Laboratory, led by
Erkki Ruoslahti, M.D., Ph.D.
