The Burnham Institute Appoints Chief Operating Officer

LA JOLLA, Calif. , May 24, 2004

The Burnham Institute announced today the appointment of Karin Eastham as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.  Ms. Eastham will also serve on the Institute's Board of Trustees.

Ms. Eastham will oversee all fiscal and administrative functions of the Institute to support approximately 500 scientists.  The Institute employs over 600 people and operates on an annual budget of approximately $57 million.

Karin Eastham's strong track record of accomplishment in managing biotechnology companies will be a great asset to our organization," says Dr. John C. Reed, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect to benefit greatly from Ms. Eastman's leadership and known-how, as she helps us to advance our mission to battle disease through medical research."

Ms. Eastham joins The Institute from Diversa Coporation where she served as Senior Vice President, Finance, Chief Financial Officer, and Secretary since 1999. Prior to joining Diversa, Ms. Eastham held similar positions with CombiChem, Inc. and Cytel Corporation. Ms. Eastham also served in various senior management positions during her 12 years with Boehringer Mannheim Corporation.

Ms. Eastham currently serves on several boards, including the private biotechnology companies Oncosis, Inc./Cyntellect and Salmedix, Inc., and a public biotechnology company, Tercica, Inc.  Ms. Eastham also serves on the board of UCSD's Athena Program.  Ms. Eastham earned her B.S. and MBA from Indiana University.  She is a Certified Public Accountant.
