Arthur Brody Pledges $1 Million to Sanford-Burnham

LA JOLLA, Calif. , November 16, 2010

San Diego businessman and philanthropist Arthur Brody has pledged $1 million to Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) to help accelerate the Institute’s ability to translate basic science discoveries into new treatments. The gift creates the Art Brody Innovation Fund, which will advance promising research that might otherwise be stalled due to lack of financial support.

Traditionally, biomedical research institutes have focused on understanding the most basic biological mechanisms that lead to disease. However, with the sophisticated drug discovery technologies available at the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, Sanford-Burnham seeks to leverage these early-stage discoveries to develop next generation drugs. The Art Brody Innovation Fund will be used, in part, to refine these early drug candidates, bring in investors and advance new medicines into clinical trials.

The Innovation Fund will also provide seed capital for companies that have been spun-out to commercialize Sanford-Burnham discoveries.  These companies have great potential to translate Sanford-Burnham’s high-impact science into new medicines while also stimulating the regional economy.

“Bridging the gap between the laboratory bench and the patient’s bedside is a critical component of our mission,” said John Reed, M.D., Ph.D., CEO, professor and Donald Bren Chief Executive Chair. “We are extremely grateful for Mr. Brody’s support because gifts like this allow breakthroughs in our laboratories to be translated into benefits for those suffering from disease.  Thanks to Art’s generosity, inventions made by our scientists today will have the opportunity to save lives tomorrow.”

Arthur Brody is a longtime Sanford-Burnham Trustee. He is the president of Brosoar Corporation, an investment company based in Rancho Santa Fe.
