Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute intern Erin Singer makes art out of science

LA JOLLA, Calif., February 24, 2012

Most interns come and go within a few months, learning from hands-on experience and making important contacts for the future. Erin Singer, who recently completed her second Sanford-Burnham internship, has created a visually stunning image of stem cells that will be displayed at the Institute in the building housing the Del E. Webb Center for Neuroscience, Aging, and Stem Cell Research. The image illustrates the beauty of human biology and serves as a reminder of Erin’s contributions to the important research conducted at the center.

“Erin has been a great addition to our research team. She surprised us with this gift. It is a wonderful introduction for visitors coming into the center, as we are hanging it in our foyer. And as a neuroscientist, it’s also a clear sign to me that both sides of her brain, the analytical left side and the artistic right side, work equally well!” said Stuart Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., director of the center.

Erin is a senior in high school, attending Poway High School. She plans to study neuroscience with the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.

“My experience at Sanford-Burnham has changed the way I think about science. I wanted to give something back to show my appreciation for the mentoring and the opportunity to work on potentially life-saving research,” said Singer.
