Sanford-Burnham-at-a-Glance

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute is dedicated to discovering the fundamental molecular causes of disease and devising the innovative therapies of tomorrow. Sanford-Burnham, with operations in California and Florida, is one of the fastest-growing research institutes in the country.

The Institute ranks among the top 4 institutions nationally for NIH grant funding. For the past decade (1999-2009), Sanford-Burnham ranked #1 worldwide in the fields of biology and biochemistry for the impact of its research publications (defined by citations per publication), according to the Institute for Scientific Information.

Sanford-Burnham utilizes a unique, collaborative approach to medical research and has established major research programs in cancer, neurodegeneration, diabetes, and infectious, inflammatory, and childhood diseases. The Institute is especially known for its world-class capabilities in stem cell research and drug discovery technologies.

In September 2008, Sanford-Burnham was awarded a $98 million grant by the NIH to establish the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics. The Center has capabilities more commonly found in large pharmaceutical companies when it comes to taking basic research and translating it into compounds that could become the prototype medicines of tomorrow.

Cancer Center

The Cancer Center has been supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) since 1981. It is one of only 7 NCI-designated basic science cancer centers in the country, with programs in:

  • Tumor Microenvironment
  • Tumor Development
  • Signal Transduction
  • Apoptosis & Cell Death

Del E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging and Stem Cell Research Center

The Del E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging and Stem Cell Research Center was established in 1999 with the aim to develop novel strategies for either protecting existing cells or replacing cells lost due to disease. The research programs in this Center focus on:

  • Neurodegenerative Disease Research
  • Stem Cells & Regenerative Biology
  • Development & Aging

Infectious & Inflammatory Disease Center

The Infectious & Inflammatory Disease Center works to address the global population's increasing vulnerability to emerging pathogens and to counter threats of deadly diseases intentionally introduced by bioterrorists. The Center also seeks to discover new ways to treat chronic inflammatory diseases. The Center’s programs are:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Inflammatory Diseases
  • Bioinformatics & Systems Biology

Diabetes and Obesity Research Center

The Diabetes and Obesity Research Center in Orlando, Florida investigates obesity-related diabetes, metabolism and cardiovascular disease. The focus is on translational research enabled by advanced technology platforms in ultra-high-throughput small molecule screening, metabolomics and genomics. The Center has established 2 research programs:

  • Metabolic Signaling & Disease
  • Cardiovascular Pathobiology

Sanford Children’s Health Research Center

The Sanford Children’s Health Research Center works in collaboration with Sanford Health of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Its aim is to combine collaborative scientific talent with state-of-the-art technology to conquer childhood diseases. The Center has programs:

  • RNA Biology
  • Genetic Diseases
  • Muscle Development & Regeneration
