Overview

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona uses a collaborative approach to promote fundamental discovery relevant to the metabolic origins of disease with emphasis on obesity-related diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. We believe the mysteries of common, complex, diseases can only be unlocked through team-based interdisciplinary strategies. Two distinct but overlapping research programs link the themes of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Cross-disciplinary interactions atop a robust technology infrastructure set the stage for breakthrough discoveries.

The technology is the engine that drives biomedical research and sets the foundation to move discoveries to the clinic. Sanford-Burnham at Lake Nona has established advanced technology platforms in drug discovery, genomics, metabolomics and deep phenotyping of small animal models of human diseases. Collectively, the shared resource cores at Lake Nona and La Jolla represent one of the most extensive in the not-for-profit world.

Translational Focus

We have established innovative approaches to translate research discoveries to clinical care through partnerships with the large health systems in Orlando, neighboring institutions at the Medical City and commercial research collaborations. We are building the foundation for productive interactions between physicians, patient-oriented researchers, basic researchers, and trainees to assemble as powerful research teams.
